Social capital has been touted widely as a source of many social benefits, but empirical research has been constrained by conceptual and causal ambiguity.  Sifting through the literature, we construct a more focused conceptualization of social capital, develop more precise measures, and conduct a causal analysis of the effects of social capital on children’s outcomes.  Using data from a cluster randomized trial of 52 elementary schools, we apply three analytical approaches:  multilevel models of intent to treat and treatment on the treated effects, instrumental variables models, and causal mediation models.  Taken together, these causal analyses provide stronger evidence than previous studies that social capital improves children’s outcomes and that these improvements are not simply a result of selection into social relations but rather that these improvements result from the social relations themselves.
